San Luis National Wildlife Refuge

With over 26,600 acres of wetlands, riparian forests, native grasslands, and vernal pools, the San Luis National Wildlife Refugee is a great place to spend with the family while learning about elks, birds, reptiles, insects, plants, amphibians, and more. The Refuge has three auto tour routes to view the majestic nature of animals in their natural habitat. Fishing is allowed in designated sites and the Refuge also has a waterfowl hunting program. Los Banos Wildlife Area

Lush Button Willow Lake teams with the stunning pageantry of 300,000 water fowl escaping the ranges of an Arctic winter. Activities include nature observation, hunting, waterfowl, fishing boating, and dog trails. Western pond turtles, raccoons, striped skunks, beaver and muskrats, as well as over 200 species of birds are among the many animals found here. Facilities include roads, parking areas, bird mound, photography blind, restrooms, etc. This is 4 miles NE of Los Banos, from Hwy 152 turn N on Hwy 165, travel N 3 miles and then right on Henry Miller Ave. for 3/4 mile. San Luis Reservoir

Located just 20 minutes from our hotel, and nestled in the grassy hills of the western San Joaquin Valley near historic Pacheco Pass, San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area is noted for boating, board sailing, camping, and picknicking. But it's the anglers who find the unit's three lakes most inviting for an outstanding fishing for striped bass. Recreation area lakes includes O'Neill Forebay, San Luis Reservoir, and Los Banos Creek Reservoir. Regular strong winds make O'Neill Forebay and San Luis Reservoir an excellent location for board sailors. Other recreational opportunities include horseback riding, hunting, winter sports, cultural or historic sites. The area has 4 boat ramps and 2 sandy beaches.
