The library opened its doors on July 1990 with celebration. It is a privately supported, non profit institution dedicated to educating the public about the life and times of the 37th President and encouraging interest in history, government and Public affairs. The museum tour encounters the Nixon Museum, the Nixon Birthplace, permanent galleries and many exhibits. This Whittier landmark was once the home of Jonathan Bailey, a pioneer in Whittier's community. It also served as home to some of the first ever Quacker meetings. The house is run by the Whittier Historical Society & Museum.

Following the Mexican War, Pio Pico, last Mexican Governor of California acquired the 9,000 acre Rancho Paso de bartolo. Pico Built an abode home that was destroyed by the floods of 1883-1884. His second abode casa, now known as Pio Pico Mansion, represents a compromise between Mexican and American cultures.
